1. Special Properties

Thyristors and diodes must be protected against overvoltages, as voltage spikes in the microsecond range can destroy power semiconductors (PS).

Overvoltages may be caused by the transient response (TSE) of the power semiconductors themselves, by switching operations in the supply network or power source, or by the system configuration—for example, when disconnecting the supply transformer.
